My long term view on housing and care provision for older people has moved away from the care home model. There are indeed many excellent care homes, but who wants to move out of their home, sell up and pay thousands in fees? Why should we have to move if we become old and frail to a ‘rented bedroom’, however beautiful the environment may be and however excellent the care? In reality, and with the right planning, there is no reason why we cannot live in our own homes, as part of a community with a totally different approach to getting older. As every English person knows, their home is their castle, and as far as I am concerned, we should keep our castle and be able to pass it on to our heirs or chosen charity.

Based on models overseas, together with a high degree of personal creativity, I wish to put together a team of forward thinking ‘movers and shakers’ who will work together to create a redefining care village environment, ‘The Ralbet’. A place where someone can buy or rent a unit at any age from 55 upwards and know that they will remain there for life. If they happen to need care or support it will be available on site.

The scheme, however, is about living life to the full, and will include a variety of retirement living opportunities set within a luxury complex. This is a new and exciting model of living for older people, popular overseas and beginning to make an impact in the UK. A wide range of social, therapeutic and creative events will be available for those who wish to join in.

The Ralbet will include an on site care agency to provide services as required to residents. Many people may never need them, but knowing they exist if you do provides peace of mind for the future. Core facilities will include a cafe and restaurant, pool, bar, wellbeing centre, library, mini cinema, beauty spa, community store and much more. Outings and activities will be organised by dedicated staff. Pool cars with drivers will be part of an environmentally considered angle, so that the older people of today are helping protect our planet for future generations.

A feasibility study with architects has been carried out, and initial business plans developed. However, following the banking crisis and economic collapse I decided to temporarily put the scheme on hold, until the environment becomes more friendly to such a significant development scheme.

This project remains my dream, and something I shall take forward when the economic and housing markets find their levels and appear stable again. In the meantime I would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels they can make a positive contribution or support the scheme. Investors are also welcome as I wish to build a team of excellence in all spheres.
